Exhibition
walking sticks & canes
April 15 – 21, 2024
Free admission
It is not easy to trace time and find the very first cane. It probably all started with someone picking up a small tree limb and using it for a walk in the woods. As time passed, this primitive object underwent social and cultural changes, naturally adopting different purposes and meanings. Today, it is commonly associated with older adults; sometimes, having one is seen with pity. However, there are unexpected occasions where people find ways to engrave their personage and stories on their sticks, owning it with pleasure and pride. It is such a universal yet understated subject with limitless exploration potential. The exhibition showcases 18 examples by designers selected by Keiji Takeuchi, to share their thoughts on this subject, wishing to broaden the general awareness of this essential tool.
