Concert
Plaid Dewey Dell
For its second edition, FOG renews its collaboration with SANTERIA TOSCANA 31, one of the main reference points of Milan’s musical panorama. On the evening of May 30, the stage of SANTERIA TOSCANA 31 will host Dewey Dell, company known for its originality, followed by the British electronic duo Plaid (Ed Handley and Andy Turner). Storm Atlas by Dewey Dell is a catalogue of storms. Powerful audiovisual scenes trap the force of meteorological turbulences of all kinds: dramaturgies of gestures, sounds and texts translate the great turmoil of nature. Composing this atlas becomes an endless chase, running after the unattainable equilibrium of the sky. The performance is a reflection on human powerlessness: even though we can examine and scientifically understand the phenomenon, we are helpless in the face of these events of monstrous scale. The work of Dewey Dell – known for their sophisticated originality – is deeply inspired by the history of art. In this new performance, the company aims to capture the unpredictability of the sky through sound, movement and light.
Following the powerful audiovisual performance of Dewey Dell, Plaid will present in preview Polymer, new album full of experimental and hypnotic tones, a combination of ambient and repetitive rhythms. The public is transported into a sonic dimension of research and reflection: Polymer, which will be released by Warp in June 7, is an album for modern times which draws inspiration from the repetitive, resistant and disturbing force of the polymers.
Dewey Dell is a dance and theatre company based between Cesena, Berlin and Vilnius. Founded in 2007, it is organised as a collective, even though each of the four members specialises in one particular field: Teodora Castellucci is the choreographer, Demetrio Castellucci is the composer, Eugenio Resta is the set and lighting designer and Agata Castellucci in charge of the collective dramaturgy and direction. In the past eleven years, Dewey Dell has developed a complex research programme with works such as: à elle vide (2007), KIN KEEN KING (2008), Baldassarre(2009), Cinquanta Urlanti Quaranta Ruggenti Sessanta Stridenti (2010), Grave (2011/2012), Marzo(2013).They were nominated for Der Faust Theaterpreis in Germany for Sleep Technique (2017). Many of their works have been programmed in major international festivals.
The innovative duo Ed Handley and Andy Turner have been expanding the realm of electronic music as Plaid since they diverged from trio The Black Dog in the early 90s. In 2019, Plaid stand alongside the likes of Aphex Twin, Autechre and Nightmares on Wax as mainstays of the Warp label as it reaches its 30th anniversary, celebrating achievements in music like few others. Their adventurous and playful approach has taken them to working with Björk and drawing comparisons to fellow collaborators Mark Bell, Arca, Haxan Cloak and more recent releases by Skee Mask and Daniel Avery. They’ve worked with the London Sinfonietta, the Southbank Gamelan Players, composed for Felix’s Machines robotic sculptures, and soundtracked events as diverse as reindeer migration in northern Europe to a level in popular platformer Little Big Planet 3. In a live capacity, their show straddles both a contemporary and club capacity, able to pack venues from Sydney Opera House and Southbank to Bloc and Berghain.
