In Tahiti, the sunsets burn with fiery red hues, and the local authorities are in turmoil over a circulating rumor: the French government is about to resume nuclear testing in Polynesia, which inflicted severe damage on the islands in the twentieth century. At the heart of the story is De Roller, the high commissioner and key representative of the French government on the islands. He navigates a delicate political and personal balance, maintaining diplomatic relations with both officials and ordinary citizens. Inspired by the autobiography of Polynesian actress Tarita Tériipaia (Marlon Brando’s third wife), the film by Albert Serra is a formidable rondo of encounters, illusions, and allusions.
