Jong-du is awkward and insecure, pulling up his nose, laughing inappropriately. One day he meets Gong-ju, a girl with cerebral palsy. Both have families who treat them badly and exploit them. Is there a place in the world for the two of them? Screened at the Venice International Film Festival in 2002, where it won the Silver Lion – Special Prize for Directing, Oasis is known for its sensitivity in addressing the problem of disability in modern society. The South Korean director turns violence into love, weighing each gesture in detail and balancing truth and surrealism.
