Milan Public Space

July 15 2022, 6.30pm
During the 2020-2021 two-year period, Milan Urban Center promoted a program of in-depth research and debate on issues related to urban phenomena, embodied in published and ongoing editorial projects. During the talk, the results of the research that led to the publication of Chiara Quinzii and Diego Terna's book on public space in the city of Milan, Milan Public Space. An in-progress atlas of everyone’s space, and the research Milano Unlocked. Public Space in Pandemic, will be presented. In dialogue with Milan's Councillor for Urban Regeneration Giancarlo Tancredi, the President of Triennale Milano Stefano Boeri, and Triennale's curator for architecture, urban regeneration and the city Nina Bassoli, the authors will discuss possible signs of the mutation taking place on the city and the potentials, problems and future developments of public space.
Public space has become, during the pandemic, one of the main actors in the urban regeneration of cities, undertaken by major international metropolises to address issues of social, economic, and health inequality and to fight the causes of the ongoing climate change: from being a possible pandemic scapegoat, everyone's space has been transformed into a lifeline, into a symbolic place of the equality of people, capable of providing city inhabitants with additional possibilities of living outside the limited residential spaces, in which we have been forced for long months. Starting with a mapping, cataloguing and analysis of Milan's public spaces, gathering the voices of technical and political actors and through observations, stories and questionnaires to citizens, the authors have proposed some strategies for improving everyone's space.
