From the depths of Mount Vesuvius, Pulcinella, the foolish servant, is sent to modern-day Campania to fulfill the last wishes of Tommaso, a humble shepherd: to save a young buffalo named Sarchiapone. In the abandoned Bourbon residence of Carditello, nestled in the heart of the "Land of Fires" and cared for by Tommaso in its decay, Pulcinella finds the young buffalo and takes it northward. The two servants, man and animal, embark on a long journey through a beautiful yet forsaken Italy, at the end of which they will not find what they had hoped for.
