Letizia Battaglia: life for photografy

October 5 2019, 5.00pm
A meeting with the great photographer Letizia Battaglia. The work of Letizia Battaglia is distinguished by her impassioned social and political commitment. For 30 years she has photographed her land, Sicily, with crude and painful images in black and white, denouncing the activities of the mafia with courageous and incisive reportages for the daily paper L’Ora of Palermo. She was the first European woman to receive, in 1985, ex aequo with the American Donna Ferrato, the Eugene Smith Award, in New York, an international recognition established to remember the photographer of Life. Another award, the Mother Johnson Achievement for Life, was bestowed on her in 1999. In 2017 she opened the International Center for Photography in the Zisa Cultural Sites. From March 20 to August 18, 2019, Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice hosted an anthological exhibition of her.
