In 1954, Vittorio De Seta filmed six documentaries in Sicily (Lu tempu di li pisci spata, Isole di fuoco, Surfarara, Pasqua in Sicilia, Contadini del mare, and Parabola d'oro). Highly innovative, they were immediately recognized internationally. In 1958-59, he directed four more significant short films, in Sicily (Pescherecci), Sardinia (Pastori di Orgosolo and Un giorno in Barbagia), and Calabria (I dimenticati). De Seta always turned his attentive gaze to realities already then threatened by "development without progress," offering a valuable testimony of rituals, customs, and knowledge that have since disappeared. He did so without neglecting the beauty of his shots, the latest technical innovations, and the legacy of the most important cinema of the preceding half-century.
The screening is part of the program Rural, which accompanies the exhibition Il Nostro Tempo, CinéFondationCartier.
