GENERAZIONI Raising Children in an Unequal World
March 28 2025, 6.00pm
Free admission upon registration
The new talk, part of the program leading up to the 24th International Exhibition Inequalities (May 13 – November 9, 2025), is a lecture by Fabrizio Zilibotti, professor of economics at Yale on how economic inequality affects parenting approaches and the educational methods adopted by families in different countries. Amid growing economic inequality, parents face increasing challenges in raising their children. Economic pressure has transformed the relatively open and relaxed parenting styles of the 1960s and 1970s into a frenetic and rigidly scheduled activity, with tensions and anxieties within families. At the same time, it has widened the ‘parenting gap’ between rich and poor, limiting opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds. It is therefore important to understand how investments in early childhood development and education systems influence the ‘parenting formula’, as is how economics can help shape policies that promote equal opportunities.
