Concert
Uri Caine & Theo Bleckmann
September 30 2022, 9.00pm
A remarkable encounter between two of New York's most creative and irreverent jazz musicians: pianist and composer Uri Craine and vocalist, composer, and recording artist Theo Bleckmann. In the performance they take on Western classical art songs.
Uri Caine has played as a pianist in groups led by, among others, Philly Joe Jones, Hank Mobley, Odean Pope, Bobby Durham and Grover Washington and has recorded over 33 discs as leader for Blue Note, Tzadik and especially Winter & Winter. His Goldberg Variations have been critically acclaimed, as have his multiple interpretations of Mahler’s vast oeuvre. As a composer, he has worked with orchestras and chamber music groups all over the world, including the American Composers Orchestra, the Volksoper Vienna, the BBC Concert Orchestra, Concerto Koln and the Arditi Quartet.
Theo Bleckmann is a multiple GRAMMY-nominated vocalist, composer and recording artist who has recorded over 20 albums and collaborated with artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Sheila Jordan, Kneebody, Ben Monder, Bang on a Can All-Stars and, most importantly, Meredith Monk. As a composer, he has received commissions from the American Composers Orchestra, E-Mex Berlin and the Jack Quartet.
