Concert
Avishai Cohen Quartet
October 7 2022, 9.00pm
Israeli-born jazz multi-instrumentalist living in New York, Avishai Cohen is a creative and visionary composer open to multiple forms of jazz. Highly acclaimed in recent years for his work with his quartet, he has been likened by "Jazztimes" to the sounds of Miles Davis: "Like Davis, Cohen can turn his trumpet into a poignant cry of humanity."
The trumpeter began performing in public in 1988 at the age of 10, playing his first solos with a big band and then touring with the Young Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra to perform under such masters as Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, and Kent Nagano. After collaborating with Israeli folk and pop artists in his home country and soon appearing on television, Cohen arrived as a skilled professional musician when he accepted a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1997, the young musician made an international reputation for himself by placing third in the Thelonious Monk Jazz Trumpet Competition. The artist trained as a jazz musician within the fertile Smalls club scene in New York’s West Village.
