A miniature opera born of the decades-long collaboration between Nino Laisné – among the most eclectic of French artists – and Spanish musician Daniel Zapico. Escaping traditional classifications, Arca ostinata is a tribute to the dreamy musicality of the theorbo (a great lute from the 16th century) and the evocative atmospheres of the Baroque era. In this work of historical revival and research, a huge magic lantern transports the viewer to another moment in time, as if in a dream filled with lights, sets and visual compositions. In parallel, the sound dimension brings back to life the great musical myths of a distant time, in a contemporary and hybridized key. A phantasmagoria, a bestiary of images, sounds and colors.
Nino Laisné's artistic research combines different elements in an exquisitely original way, leaping over all genre boundaries. In recent years, he has created a unique universe centred around the image. Through his knowledge of cinema and music, the artist produces dialogues made up of sounds rather than words. His rather quirky works combine different modes of expression and include historical and sociological elements: art, popular tradition, fashion, cabaret, opera. As early as 2010, with Os convidados, Laisné’s images took on sound, suggesting traditional music. In 2017, he created the show Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando, produced by his encounter with François Chaignaud and presented at the 72nd Avignon Festival. In October 2019, for his new solo exhibition at the FRAC Franche-Comté, he presented L’air des infortunés, a film revisiting a historical imposture. He is associate artist at Les 2 Scènes – Scène nationale de Besançon.
From an early age Daniel Zapico focused his studies in the field of ancient music. In 1999 he began specializing in the theorbo at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música in Langreo. He graduated from the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya with highest honors. In 2012 he obtained a master's degree in musicology, music education and interpretation from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. As a founding member of the ensemble Forma Antiqva, he has performed at major world festivals dedicated to early music. His close collaboration with Nino Laisné has recently led him to feature in the artist’s show Romances inciertos, un autre Orlando. In 2020, for the label Alborada, Daniel Zapico published Au monde, his first solo album, acclaimed by international critics and awarded by Diapason d’Or.
