When you think of science, some great discoveries shine through: the Higgs Boson! Gravitational waves! Sometimes we forget what happens between one discovery and the next: there is a group of people who continue to do the methodical work. On the border between Switzerland and France there is a citadel called CERN, an international community of thousands of people working toward a common goal. How can they work for years – sometimes decades – as one single, huge collective brain? What are they searching for?
