On the occasion of its recent release for Nero Editions (Rome), the editors of the book Silvia Franceschini and Valerio Borgonuovo talk about it in conversation with Joseph Grima, director of Museo del Design Italiano, and some of the promoters of Global Tools including Franco Raggi, Ugo La Pietra, Lapo Binazzi and Ines Mosconi.
Global Tools 1973-1975 When Education Coincides with Lifedocuments and retraces the eponymous experience of Radical Design and its multidisciplinary school program “without students or teachers”. The story begun with its foundation in 1973 by groups and figures drawn from Italian Radical Architecture (Archizoom, Superstudio, UFO, Mendini, La Pietra, Pettena, Dalisi, and Sottsass among others), Arte Povera and Conceptual Art (among whichDavide Mosconi and Franco Vaccari), and ended in 1975 after three years of intense experimentation. This book is both a commentary and an impressive visual archive that brings together essays by international authors such as Beatriz Colomina, Franco Raggi, Simon Sadler, Manola Antonioli andAlessandro Vicari, Alison J. Clarke, and Maurizio Lazzarato, reproductions of the only two official Global Tools bulletins—entirely republished here for the first time—and many other original documents.
A unique and definitive book which recontextualizes this fascinating experience of the late 20th century within a more complex network of references and links.
