On the occasion of the release of his new album Movement on Sacred Bones, we host Gigi Masin at Voce for a live listening session of selected tracks from the record. With this work, Masin moves beyond the concept of ambient music, opening up new sonic possibilities and reaffirming his centrality in the contemporary scene. A composer always devoted to the pursuit of beauty, he has become a cult figure over time through late-night radio broadcasts, word of mouth, and later through sampling and collaborations with artists such as Ron Trent, Young Marco, Jonny Nash, and Ben Vince. During the event, Masin engages in a conversation with curator Tommaso Toma, reflecting on a life guided by pure ideals and a sonic language that moves seamlessly through MIDI melancholies, technoid drifts, liminal clouds, and aquatic ambient depths.
Gigi Masin, a trail-blazing composer and multi-instrumentalist whose sound has evolved through landscapes of ambient, jazz and electronic dance music, is confounding expectations with the new album Movement, which looks back with pride and forwards with renewed purpose. Self-released in 1986 and given away for free, his debut album Wind was meant to be both his introduction and his farewell to music. In 2014, Masin was approached out of the blue by Amsterdam-based label Music From Memory to release a compilation of his music, displaying the breadth of his talents, from zither and trumpet to synthesizers and radio sampling. Alongside Jonny Nash and Marco Sterk, he formed Gaussian Curve, a trio of likeminded artists who became friends through a shared musical language, bringing new shades to his Mediterranean sensibility. His compositions have also found expression on screen, including the score Azzurra, which aired on Italian television in 2024, and 2025 series Dallas, 2019. Calypso (2020), created during the pandemic, was an ode to the Mediterranean. Movement, released on US-based indie label Sacred Bones, is his next act. The tracks here are dynamic, draped in ambient hues but propelled by the vitality of dance music. Masin describes it as "music for moving the body", or rhythm music for the romantic soul, reintroducing him on his own terms, comfortable on festival stages and in club booths alike, recalling his beginnings as a DJ.
