This major retrospective is dedicated to the work of Lella and Massimo Vignelli and traces their significant contributions to the evolution of international design and graphic culture. Through a curated selection of objects, furniture, drawings, models, sketches, photographs, manuals, trademarks, books, covers, and magazines from their vast body of work, the exhibition reconstructs the Vignellis' intellectual and human journey, which was shaped by vibrant international creative communities. The story unfolds between Milan, which was animated by the cultural revival of the postwar years, and New York, a cosmopolitan metropolis and laboratory of possibilities where the Vignellis settled in 1964.
The exhibition is the result of close collaboration with the Vignellis' children, Valentina and Luca, as well as the Vignelli Center for Design Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in the United States. The center houses over 750,000 documents and artifacts related to the many creative fields the duo explored during over fifty years of activity.
