Monumentum DA is a choreographic work that, through the encounter between movement and Italian Sign Language (LIS) — a human, living, embodied language that doesn’t speak of margins but of new forms — turns diversity into a space of possibility. On stage, LIS and the body of Diana Anselmo, a deaf performer and activist, become “linguistic monuments” in constant transformation, amplifying and giving space to the intrinsic potential of sign language, restoring to it a poetic and political dimension. LIS thus emerges as a territory of expression that dismantles communicative hierarchies, generating new forms of listening, relationship, and connection, an act of resistance against phonocentric marginalization.
Cristina Kristal Rizzo is a Florence-based dancemaker who has been active on the Italian contemporary dance scene since the early 1990s. She is one of the founding members of the acclaimed collective Kinkaleri, with whom she collaborated extensively on the international performance circuit, receiving several major awards including the Ubu Prize and the Lo Straniero Prize. Since 2008, she has pursued an independent choreographic path, directing her research toward a theoretical reflection with strong dynamic impact—aimed at regenerating the act of creation and opening critical perspectives on the present. She has established herself as one of the leading figures in Italian choreography. Her most recent works include: MONUMENTUM the second sleep, ECHOES, TOCCARE the white dance (winner of the 2020 Danza&Danza Award for Contemporary Choreography), ULTRAS sleeping dances, VN Serenade, Prélude, ikea, and BoleroEffect. Alongside the touring of her productions, she carries out a prolific program of experimental formats, lectures, workshops, advanced training, and theoretical writing. As a guest choreographer, she has created works for major Italian opera houses and institutions. She is currently involved as a mentor in the Creative Campus project curated by Sardegna Teatro.
Diana Anselmo is a Deaf artist and performer, activist, and self-proclaimed improvised human being. Bilingual in Italian Sign Language (LIS) and Italian, she made her debut with Self-Portrait in 3 Acts (2021), which toured nationally and internationally. Her international debut was in Xavier Le Roy’s Le Sacre du Printemps (2022). She held her first solo exhibition, Je Vous Aime, at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin and is represented by Galleria Eugenia Delfini in Rome, where she exhibited deafnotdead. Since 2023, she has collaborated as a performer with choreographer Cristina Kristal Rizzo. She is also the president of Al.DI.Qua. Artists, the first association in Europe by and for artists with disabilities.
