Orphan Totò is discovered in a cabbage field and adopted by a wise and kind old woman named Lolotta. When the woman dies, Totò ends up in a slum on the outskirts of Milan, but when greedy developers threaten the community's land, Lolotta's ghost visits Totò and offers him a special gift. Written by Cesare Zavattini and directed and produced by Vittorio De Sica, the 1951 Cannes award-winning fantasy film unfolds as a fairy tale set in a world where “good morning really means good morning.” The famous scene in Piazza del Duomo crowded with street sweepers on flying brooms inspired Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
