The Mexican playwright, set designer and theatrical director Anacarsis Ramos, having conquered audiences in the rest of Europe, presents the Italian premiere of his Mi madre y el dinero. Between 1960 and 2020, Josefina Orlaineta, the artist's mother, held over forty different jobs in Campeche, one of Mexico's poorest states. Mother and son have turned work into a theatrical language, revisiting onstage the occupations that forged their family and their bond. Combining reality with theatrical fiction, the piece examines the role played by money in sixty years of Campeche history, transforming memories into a shared narrative. With moving simplicity, Mi madre y el dinero contemplates the dignity of work and the persistence of social inequality, ultimately serving as a meta-theatrical investigation in which Josefina's precarious past mirrors the fragility of theater itself, responsible for bringing the complexity of life to the stage.
Anacarsis Ramos is a playwright, set designer, theater director, and actor. He studied theater and sociology. His work explores the relationship between social reality and its representation in the media, with a particular interest in the various applications of fiction in state, private, and community contexts. Through lyricism, humor, and parody, his works highlight the narrative construction of reality and expose the biases involved in representation. In addition to theater projects, he coordinates various pedagogical initiatives and theater research. He writes about theater on the blog Mataclase. Ramos is a member of the company Pornotráfico, a Mexico City–based group of artists that approaches the stage as a space to experiment with reality. His artistic practice stems from the use of globalized resources (films, YouTube videos, commercials, pop songs, and political propaganda) and their contamination with narratives of class struggle, colonization, queer theories, and neurodiversity. He has employed low-budget remakes, fake subtitles, dubbing, karaoke, cosplay, PowerPoint presentations, and fake tutorials in almost all of his works, aiming to challenge the prevailing aesthetic elitism and copyright norms.
