Creator of a unique scenic language, Mario Banushi presents an intimate but universal visual poem on the mother-child bond. This new creation by the Albanian young director, a recent revelation on the international theatrical scene, pays homage to the origins of life and the specific weight of the word “Mamma” – both for those who say it and those who hear it. The staging of MAMI proves to be a landscape of memory both unsettling and familiar. Immersed in silence, the performers bring to life moments of profound emotion, offering us a collective immersion in the recollections and emotional legacy that we all carry with us.
Mario Banushi was born in 1998 and lived in Albania until the age of six before moving permanently to Greece. He studied acting at the Drama School of the Athens Conservatory, graduating in 2020. In the same year, he made his first short film, Pranvera, which was selected for the Tirana International Film Festival 2021. His theater directorial debut was Ragada, created and presented inside a private home in Athens during the pandemic lockdowns. His next work, Goodbye, Lindita, premiered in 2023 at the National Theatre of Greece to critical and public acclaim. He has received invitations from international festivals and theaters, including the Festival d'Avignon, Wiener Festwochen, International Theatre Amsterdam, Adelaide Festival in Australia, and Bitef in Belgrade, where he won the Bitef Special Award "Jovan Ćirilov" and the Politika Award for Best Direction. His third work, Taverna Miresia – Mario Bella Anastasia, was presented in July 2023 at the Athens and Epidaurus Festival. Mario Banushi’s trilogy is commonly known as Romance Familiare, which means “family romance” in Albanian. His latest work, MAMI, was presented at Onassis Stegi in Athens. Mario Banushi is an Onassis AiR Fellow and an artist in residence at the Centre Culturel Hellénique in Paris.
