Silvia Rampelli, a leader in Italian experimental performance and the founder of the Habilléd’eau company, has worked for over twenty years on the human body, the act of performing and perceptions capable of manifesting presence and transformation. One of contemporary choreography’s most radical and uncompromising undertakings, the Habillé d’eau stage is a field of perception where all input is sensory. Body, time, space, light, sound and silence are equally important components of a dynamic fraught with both density and subtraction, destined, with spectators present, to become an event, a horizon. The latest creation, L'avvenire (Becoming), addresses the very essence of stage play, or its nature as an event. What occurs onstage? Four bodies perform a precise exercise in space and time, a reflection on whether presence can constitute a manifestation or generate a gap between what appears and a beyond in which appearance is surpassed and doubted.
Graduated in Philosophy, Silvia Rampelli centers her research on the nature of the act and on the centrality of perception within both stage practice and transformative experiential processes. In 2002 she founded Habillé d’eau, an independent performative research project grounded in a stable core of collaborators and in an ongoing dialogue with artists who have contributed to its evolution over time. The current group includes Alessandra Cristiani, Eleonora Chiocchini, Valerio Sirna, Stefania Tansini, and Gianni Staropoli (lighting). With Habillé d’eau she has been produced, among others, by the Venice Biennale – International Theater Festival and invited to major festivals. Active in theoretical and educational fields alongside her artistic research, she leads seminars and public talks in theaters, festivals, and institutions, teaches in universities and higher education programs, and develops projects, interventions, and practices within contexts of social fragility. Her work has received numerous publications and critical recognitions, including the Ubu Award 2018 for Best Dance Performance.
