Republic of Love

Laurie Anderson
May 29 2026, 9.00pm
A pioneer of experimental music and a multidisciplinary artist—performer, singer, and musician, and one of the most iconic figures of the New York scene—Laurie Anderson takes the stage in our Garden with a solo version of Republic of Love. Her musical language moves between art rock and contemporary music, distinguished by her use of the electric violin. Originally conceived as a speech on the relationship between government and love, the project she brings to the stage has taken on several forms over time—from essays to solo and concerts with the group Sexmob—becoming a lecture-performance on the state of art and the world in times of crisis. Anderson presents a live set in which voice and violin intertwine in an immersive experience.
Laurie Anderson is one of the most versatile and innovative artists of her generation, working across performance, music, film, visual art, and technology. Her career launched with O Superman in 1981, earning five Grammy nominations and a Grammy win in 2018 for Landfall with the Kronos Quartet.
Her live shows range from the eight-hour United States (1982) to ARK: United States Part V (2024). As NASA's first artist-in-residence in 2002, she created The End of the Moon, and her VR works won Best VR Experience at the 74th Venice International Film Festival. Heart of a Dog (2015) screened at Venice and Toronto, and her installations have shown at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn, Moderna Museet, and institutions worldwide. She has collaborated with Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Wim Wenders. Anderson holds the Guggenheim Fellowship, the Wolf Prize, and a 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy. Her partner in art and life was Lou Reed.
