After Frankenstein (A Love Story), presented at Triennale Milano in 2023, the Motus company returns to FOG to conclude the tale of the “monster” who sprang from the mind of a youthful Mary Shelley. This touching new chapter tells of how the hated creature is excluded from the apparent happiness of humans solely on account of his unconventional appearance. Frankenstein (History of Hate) intersperses its narrative themes with modernity, as the creature and Dr. Frankenstein pursue each other during a dramatically unhinged “performed film” set amidst the eco-monsters and sun-scorched beaches of an arid, apocalyptic planet in the last days of humanity.
Motus was founded in Rimini in 1991 by Enrico Casagrande and Daniela Nicolò, producing from the outset performances capable of addressing the harshest contradictions of the present. The company’s work, encompassing theatre, performance, and installations, and accompanied by an intensive seminar program, has been presented across Europe and worldwide. In 2020, the directors began working on the project Tutto Brucia, which, drawing inspiration from Euripides’ The Trojan Women, explores the condition of “ending” present in the tragedy, closely linked to the state of the contemporary world marked by the pandemic and mourning. From Tutto Brucia (presented at Triennale Milano Teatro during the 2021 theatre season) emerged two solo pieces: You Were Nothing but Wind – a focus with Silvia Calderoni on the figure of Hecuba, the “black bitch with eyes of fire” – and Of the Nightingale I Envy the Fate – a deep dive into Cassandra and her transformation into a bird, with Stefania Tansini (Milan premiere at FOG 2023). The company’s directors served as artistic directors for the pandemic-affected fiftieth edition of the Santarcangelo Festival – a biennial project in three acts between July 2020 and July 2021. In 2023, they curated Supernova, the first experiment in Rimini’s contemporary performing arts festival. In 2021, Motus won the prestigious Critics’ Award from the National Association of Theatre Critics. The first chapter of the trilogy dedicated to the creature born from Mary Shelley’s imagination, Frankenstein (A Love Story), was presented at Triennale Milano Teatro during the 2023 theatre season.
