Christian Rizzo – Caty Olive
April 4 – 8, 2023
Tuesday, April 4 to Saturday, April 8 11.30 am, 12.30 pm, 3.30 pm, 4.30 pm, 5.30 pm, 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm Running time 15’ (loop installation)
Two ghostly figures twirl as if in a mysterious waltz, in a delicate dance without bodies which reflects on the absence of the human form and the secret life of objects. The performative installation conceived by Christian Rizzo – a multidisciplinary artist who moves between fashion, art and performance – stages a dance without dancers (with the collaboration of light designer Caty Olive). In their place, a pair of suspended dresses moves to the breeze created by some fans. In a carousel of absent presences, accompanied by rapid electronic music and magnetic light effects, the two garments intertwine on stage with hypnotic movements and poetic simplicity, like two mechanical Ginger and Fred oblivious to their status as inanimate objects.
Christian Rizzo took his first steps as an artist in Toulouse, between a rock band, his own clothing line and visual arts studies. He approaches theater almost by chance, and in 1996 he founds l’association fragile, an association presenting performances, installations, dance pieces, along with other commissions for opera, fashion and visual arts. Christian Rizzo regularly teaches in art schools in France and abroad, as well as in institutions dedicated to contemporary dance. In 2015 he took over as the Director of the ICI (International Choreographic Institute) in Montpellier. As an artist, he relentlessly pursues the elasticity and tension between bodies and space in narratives where fiction emerges from abstraction.
