On the centenary of Piero Umiliani’s birth, this listening session explores the musical and cultural legacy of one of the most visionary composers of twentieth-century Italy through a journey that brings together film music, jazz, library music and sampling. Guided by Joan Thiele and Andrea Fabrizii, we explore Umiliani’s repertoire from different perspectives, ranging from his jazz experimentation to the contemporary rediscovery of the CAM Sugar Catalogue. Through rediscovered tapes, forgotten works and influences that continue to resonate in the work of producers, songwriters and new generations of artists, a portrait emerges of a composer whose music retains an extraordinary ability to speak to the present. A sonic journey dedicated to a composer who transformed the Italian imagination into a universal and timeless language.

Joan Thiele is an Italian singer-songwriter and producer. Her sonic universe brings together R&B, soul, jazz and cinematic atmospheres, reflecting her deep appreciation for the great tradition of Italian film music and composers such as Piero Umiliani and Piero Piccioni. In 2025, she competed at the Sanremo Music Festival with the song Eco, followed by the release of her album Joanita, which further developed her dialogue with Italian film scores through samples drawn from Umiliani’s repertoire. In 2023, she won the David di Donatello Award for Best Original Song for Proiettili, featured in the film Ti mangio il cuore, which premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival.
