A special evening to discover the 79th edition of the Locarno Film Festival and its upcoming events, featuring a preview screening of Broken Arrow (Delmer Daves, 1950). Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro, in conversation with Corriere della Sera film critic Paolo Mereghetti, will present the new edition of the Festival, scheduled to take place from August 5 to 15, 2026, as well as the new retrospective Red & Black – The Hollywood Left and the Blacklist, an in-depth exploration of one of the most controversial and politically significant chapters in the history of American cinema. The evening will conclude with a screening of Broken Arrow, widely regarded as a landmark of revisionist Western cinema.

Screening of Broken Arrow (Delmer Daves, USA, 1950)
Broken Arrow made film history as one of the first postwar Hollywood productions to portray Native Americans, and particularly the Apache, with dignity, intelligence, and respect, helping to challenge the dominant racial stereotypes of the time. The film also bears the uncredited contribution of Albert Maltz, one of the famous “Hollywood Ten.” Blacklisted during the McCarthy era, Maltz was unable to appear officially in the credits and was forced to use a front writer for the screenplay, making Broken Arrow a powerful example of the concrete consequences of political persecution within the American film industry.
